Cinq Japan Co., Ltd. opened its first select shop, edit by cinq, in Saitama Prefecture, a shop that stocks items designed for long-term use, maintenance, and restoration.

The core concept of the shop is to end the era where a product’s life concludes the moment it breaks, especially since they have noticed how there is consumer dissatisfaction with the “replace rather than repair” mindset. The inventory includes the original hat brand alter, artisan-crafted chairs, and a permanent collection of Onomichi Denim, marking the first time the Hiroshima-based brand has established a constant presence outside its home region.

The alter brand offers custom-tailored hats produced by an in-house craftsman. Customers select a base design which is then adjusted to their specific measurements. This service caters to individuals who previously struggled to find suitable headwear. Since the opening, the shop has received a high volume of orders and repair requests, resulting in a current one-month wait time for delivery.

The furniture selection features renowned pieces such as the Y-chair and Stool 60. These items are chosen for their ability to develop a unique patina over time, where scratches and colour changes are viewed as enhancements rather than defects. Similarly, the Onomichi Denim collection features “real used denim” that records the life and stories of the previous wearer through distinct fading and wear patterns.

The shop occupies a renovated warehouse, operating under a philosophy that rejects the linear economy. It also includes edit coffee, a cafe space serving beverages and food, including pizza supervised by the local restaurant Pizzeria Ohsaki. The interior retains the original texture of the warehouse, creating a cohesive environment that reflects the history of the building.
Craftsman Sano, who manages the production and repairs, noted that the shop has attracted both local residents and visitors from Tokyo who previously travelled to Hiroshima for specific products. The high demand for repairs and custom fittings indicates a growing interest in choosing goods that last.
