New PATRAIL digital tool targets illegal waste dumping across natural parks

Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Ltd. will release a new reporting and information-sharing function for its digital trail management platform, PATRAIL, in March 2027.

The platform was developed in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment’s Kanto Regional Environment Office Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park Management Office. The newest upgrade will widen the software’s remit from trail maintenance to the broader management of natural parks. Field trials to finalise the function will begin in October 2026 across areas overseen by the ministry’s local office.

PATRAIL was launched commercially in May 2026 following trials in Yamanashi Prefecture and the town of Hakone. It uses a smartphone application and a web-based console to centralise the monitoring of mountain tracks and wooden fixtures. The existing setup matches site photographs with GPS coordinates and mapping data, reducing the labour needed to inspect infrastructure, determine repair priorities and compile public compliance documents.

The forthcoming release expands data logging beyond designated footpaths to any location within a park boundary. Field workers will be able to document environmental disturbances, including illegal rubbish disposal, invasive flora, vegetation damage caused by wild animals, fallen trees, rockfalls and soil erosion. By logging the time, location, inspector identity and field conditions on digital maps, the platform establishes an auditable record of environmental hazards across remote terrain.

To eliminate communication bottlenecks between administrative bodies, the update introduces a feature that extracts specific recorded data into standalone PDF documents or accessible web links. This allows land managers to dispatch geotagged reports and photographic evidence directly to partner agencies and municipal departments that do not operate PATRAIL accounts.

Odakyu Electric Railway, an official partner of Japan’s national parks, stated that supporting the systematic upkeep of natural parks remains central to protecting ecological habitats and maintaining safe mountain tourism.
