Mori, a brand from HumanForum Co. Ltd., is a used clothing store that advocates the concept of second-hand retail. They carry over 6000 vintage clothing and items from all over the world.
Mori launched MORI MEMBERS two weeks ago, a subscription service that offers clothing rental, repair, dye, and workshops, for a monthly fee of 5,000 yen. This initiative aims to reduce the fashion waste problem by extending the product life of garments through second-hand resale and encouraging sustainability in the fashion industry.
The rental service is an effort to counter fast fashion by allowing MORI MEMBERS to rent up to 5 pieces of used/vintage garments priced within 20,000 yen for up to a month. Users can couple this service with a free personal styling session available in-store. Renting is one way to enjoy trends with lesser damage to the environment.
Instead of throwing away damaged clothing, MORI MEMBERS are entitled to the repair of one garment each month. RE;CIRCLE STUDIO will do the garment repair for Mori. This service encourages customers to think twice before tossing out an old piece of clothing when they have access to sustainable options in their everyday life.
On top of rental and repair, MORI MEMBERS also get to enjoy KUROZOME, which translates to “black dye.” The Kyoto Montsuki Deep Black Dye has been around for over a hundred years. At Mori, this dyeing technique is used to give new life to stained or worn fashion items, further prolonging their lifespan.
MORI MEMBERS can also participate in free workshops to learn more about topics, such as the second-hand clothing industry and sustainable fashion & living, through hands-on experiences. Last year, an Aizome dye workshop was conducted.
Fashion impacts the environment. As a member of the industry, Mori aims to respond responsibly. They do so by their continued promotion of used clothing to build a society that celebrates a culture of upcycled fashion and vintage clothing.
