Waste management firm Sugawara Sangyo has opened a new community hub, Sea-Mt Eco Base, in Isahaya, Nagasaki, earlier this week, with the goal of creating a local centre for resource circulation and environmental education.
The facility is described as a “hands-on eco-hub where local resources and people circulate.” This opening marks a strategic shift for Sugawara Sangyo, which has operated in the region for 40 years. The company’s stated ambition is to proceed beyond only processing waste, and aimed instead to connect things that can be reused to their next value with the community’s hands.
The Eco Base integrates three functions. It features a collection space that purchases recyclables such as used paper, cooking oil and plastic bottles directly from the public, lowering the barrier for participation in recycling. An on-site workshop and shop will sell upcycled goods made from waste materials, with plans to develop original products in partnership with local schools and businesses.
The facility also includes a community cafe furnished with reused items. It is designed to be a “town veranda,” a Japanese concept for a casual gathering spot where people of all ages can connect.
This initiative builds on Sugawara Sangyo’s existing community engagement. The company has previously collaborated with the J.League football club V-Varen Nagasaki to upcycle approximately 40,000 plastic bottle caps into coasters for fans. It also runs projects with Isahaya Commercial High School and participates in local environmental fairs to promote what it calls “visible recycling.”
Future plans for the hub include workshops on recycling cooking oil, educational events for children, and hands-on “destruction experiences” with waste materials.
