Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Miyoshi City market gives construction waste a second life every month

TSUDA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY is establishing a regular market for salvaged building materials in Tokushima Prefecture, tackling what it calls the major industry issue of usable items being discarded even though they are not rubbish.

The Osaka-based company will hold its “Building Materials Half-Price Market” on a monthly basis in Miyoshi City, following a successful inaugural event in August. The initiative aims to create a circular economy hub for construction materials in the Shikoku region by promoting reuse and upcycling.

The first market, held from 1-3 August, drew over 700 visitors from across all four of Shikoku’s prefectures. The event received official recognition from the local government, with the Mayor of Miyoshi participating in a ceremonial opening with company representative Naoki Tsuda. This broad attendance also contributed to the local economy, a success the company attributes to Miyoshi’s central location, often called the “Navel of Tokushima.”

Operating from its “Hangakuya” (Half-Price) store within a former elementary school, the market sells a variety of professionally appraised materials, furniture, hardware and tools at less than half their retail price. All items are unique, salvaged from construction and demolition sites.

Beyond sales, the company provides comprehensive support and professional advice to a diverse range of customers. The first event attracted aspiring business owners and individuals renovating traditional Japanese houses, known as kominka. It also offers guidance on material selection and project support, catering to everyone from DIY beginners to professional craftspeople.

Following the positive reception, the company established a regular schedule for the market. It will now take place on the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday of every month. This system ensures a stable supply of materials for those seeking them and reinforces the project’s goal of becoming a permanent circulation hub for building materials in Shikoku.
