Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

MiYO ORGANIC expands amenities range for sustainable hospitality

MiYO ORGANIC, a B-Corp Japanese lifestyle brand specialising in sustainable amenities, has announced the launch of eight new eco-friendly products designed for the hospitality sector. The expanded lineup aims to provide hotels with high-quality alternatives to conventional single-use plastics, utilising biodegradable materials and packaging derived from Japan’s neglected bamboo forests.

The Nagoya-based company is a pioneer in the Japanese circular economy by addressing the dual issues of plastic waste and abandoned bamboo groves that threaten local biodiversity. MiYO ORGANIC previously gained recognition for its bamboo toothbrushes and hair combs, receiving a Good Design Award in 2022. This latest release expands their portfolio to cover a wider range of guest needs.

The eight new items include a shower cap made from Polylactic Acid (PLA), a corn-derived biodegradable material that decomposes naturally in soil. The company also introduced a bamboo dental floss that is entirely free of plastic and BPA (Bisphenol A), a chemical often found in polycarbonate plastics. Other additions include a paper-based sanitary bag, a compact sewing kit, a sponge-type shoe polish, a soft shoe polishing cloth, a recyclable EVA nail file that emits no dioxins upon incineration, and a durable silicone hair tie.

For the shower cap, sanitary bag, sewing kit, and hair tie, MiYO ORGANIC utilises bamboo paper made 100 per cent from Japanese abandoned bamboo. By harvesting bamboo from neglected groves, the company converts a potential environmental hazard into a resource.

MiYO ORGANIC stated that they selected sustainable materials out of consideration for the global environment to ensure that the products not only serve a functional purpose but also enhance the guest experience. The company aims to shift the perception of hotel amenities from disposable waste to “gifts” that guests value. Since its inception, the brand has sold over 2.5 million units, resulting in a reduction of more than 25 tonnes of plastic waste.

Hotels and hospitality providers can order the new products in lots starting from 50 units, making sustainable transitions accessible for facilities of varying sizes.
