Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Kyoto’s Junkan Fes returns on April 20

Junkan Fes is back! This sustainability-focused festival designed with Generation Z will take place on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Umekoji Park in Kyoto.

Since its debut in 2022, Junkan Fes has been redefining sustainability by involving young people and key players in the reuse industry. Each edition has drawn over 10,000 attendees, making it a major event in Kyoto’s environmental movement.

A major highlight is “¥0 Market,” where visitors can donate and take home second-hand clothing for free. The festival also offers interactive workshops, exhibitions, and stage events that make reuse and recycling fun and accessible. A food court featuring carefully curated, high-quality ingredients ensures a delicious and safe dining experience.

The event will also showcase a variety of sustainability initiatives aimed at engaging young people in circular economy principles. “RELEASE⇔CATCH,” a clothing collection and circulation platform ensures that donated garments find new homes. Collection boxes will also be set up at the festival to encourage further contributions.

The festival will be held at its usual spot at Umekoji Park, on Sunday, April 20. (In case of rain, the festival will be postponed to May 18.) Entry is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring reusable bags, bottles, containers, and cutlery to support the festival’s eco-friendly mission.

To date, the “RELEASE⇔CATCH” collection boxes have gathered approximately 2.4 tons of clothing. The ¥0 Market has distributed around 2,000 second-hand garments, contributing to an estimated CO2 reduction of 54.3 tons.
