Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Kyoto’s Arashiyama adds six SmaGO bins to preserve scenic public spaces

Six solar-powered SmaGO smart bins, created by Forcetec, Inc., have been installed at three prominent locations in Kyoto’s Arashiyama area as part of a joint public-private initiative to tackle litter and preserve the region’s scenic beauty.

The effort aims to support sustainable tourism in one of Japan’s most visited destinations. Known for its seasonal landscapes and historic temples, Arashiyama has faced growing concerns over street litter, especially from food tourism. In response, local communities, businesses and government stakeholders have launched coordinated actions, including the “Arashiyama Garbage Issues Summit,” to encourage better public behaviour.

Four of the new SmaGO bins were donated by Berry Project Co., Ltd. (Ebisuya Sohonten), and two from the Arashiyama Preservation Society and the Arashiyama Shopping Street Association. These high-tech bins have been installed at three high-traffic locations: in front of Tenryu-ji Temple, near the Arashiyama Preservation Society, and along a key shopping street.

Designed to integrate visually with Arashiyama’s bamboo grove paths, the bins use solar power to compact waste to one-fifth of its original volume. Real-time data transmission allows sanitation teams to monitor fill levels remotely, reducing unnecessary collection and operational inefficiencies. Each unit’s outer panels can be customised with educational messages or sponsorship branding, helping offset maintenance costs.

An unveiling ceremony and commendation event celebrated the installation, marking a step forward in Kyoto’s cultural and environmental protection.
