COCOO LLC, a Kyoto-based lifestyle brand specialising in lacquerware, announced the launch of its new KOMLA veil series, a product line that debuted in 2024 as a washable and reusable alternative to disposable paper cups. This latest evolution combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern functionality.

The KOMLA veil series features a base made of paper coated with multiple layers of natural black lacquer. Through a meticulous polishing process, the craftsmen achieve a mirror-like lustre that reveals hints of colour depending on the angle of light. This finish provides both aesthetic depth and protective, ensuring the product is durable despite frequent use.
The new series features an ultra-thin rim, which measures approximately one millimetre. This design removes the physical presence of the vessel from the drinking experience, allowing the taste and aroma of the beverage to reach the palate more directly. The smooth texture of the polished lacquer further enhances the tactile sensation during use.

Despite its paper core and natural lacquer surface, the cup is compatible with household dishwashers. This is the first instance in Japan where paper-based lacquerware has achieved such a level of durability, verified through testing by third-party institutions. This feature addresses a common barrier to lacquerware adoption, as traditional urushi products typically require careful hand-washing.
The cups weigh approximately 14 grams and have a capacity of 200 millilitres. They are available in three colours, including Midnight, Rouge, and Amber, with a retail price of 4,400 yen including tax. The KOMLA veil series will be available for early purchase during a pop-up event at Kyoto Okazaki Tsutaya Books that runs till 20 May.
