Rinne.bar, a creative upcycling space operated by RINNE Inc., is marking its fifth anniversary in February 2025 by launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise 5 million yen. The funds will sustain operations for six months at its Shin-Okachimachi store before transitioning to a new stage of development.
Established in 2020, Rinne.bar was created as a hub for upcycling and creative expression. Its early days were overshadowed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which presented significant operational challenges. Zenbird has witnessed how the Rinne team endured these hardships, finally preserving to the wonder it is today, driving the joy of fostering community connections and creative expression through upcycling.
Rinne.bar’s unique charm lies in its collection of “gifted items,” each carrying personal stories. From kimonos used in traditional dance classes to yarn from past crafting hobbies, these materials are transformed into new creations, symbolizing connection and renewal.
The initiative has garnered significant recognition, winning the Japan Hobby Association Award at Japan Handmade of the Year 2024 and the Dream Award at the Figaro Japon BWA Pitch Contest 2024. Since its founding, Rinne.bar has welcomed more than 5,600 visitors, with 30% returning regularly.
The crowdfunding campaign seeks to secure funds to maintain the creative space while promoting sustainability through upcycling. Contributions will support community outreach efforts aimed at inspiring the next generation, ensuring a lasting impact.
Looking ahead, Rinne.bar envisions further evolving into a “Creative Reuse Center,” a hub fostering sustainability through enjoyable, collaborative experiences. The company also plans to establish new locations by 2026, extending its mission to inspire creative reuse and strengthen community ties. Interested parties are encouraged to collaborate in setting up similar spaces.
Sachiyo Kojima, founder and CEO of RINNE Inc., expressed a desire to share the special spirit of Rinne.bar with even more people. She highlighted the many acts of generosity and creativity that have enriched the space and hopes to continue fostering connections through shared experiences.
Zenbird has collaborated with Rinne.bar on many occasions, and each time it has been a fun for participants. Be it with the delegates from UNDP Philippines or the Sustainable City Guidebook release event, everyone was communicating and enjoying their time over a circular activity of upcycling.
