Japanese bamboo artisan to share craft in Budapest Folk Arts festival

Japanese bamboo manufacturer Yamagishi Bamboo Shop Co., Ltd., operating under the specialised brand Taketora, will hold an interactive bamboo handling session on 19 August in Budapest, Hungary, prior to participating in the Festival of Folk Arts at Buda Castle from 20 to 23 August.

Founded in 1894, the company developed the workshop to offer participants a sensory learning programme focused on physical interaction with natural materials. Led by Taketora’s fourth-generation head, Yoshihiro Yamagishi, the two-hour session invites attendees to handle various bamboo species and crafted items directly. Participants will explore variations in flexibility, weight, hardness, and sharpness across different sections of the plant, gaining insight into how traditional Japanese craft techniques harness the intrinsic qualities of renewable resources.

The international session builds upon an earlier workshop conducted by the company at India’s National Institute of Design in January 2026, where direct contact with raw materials successfully communicated craft heritage across language boundaries. The upcoming session in Budapest expects approximately 30 participants, comprising local residents interested in Japanese culture, university students studying the Japanese language, and local Hungarian basket weavers invited through the festival’s executive committee.

Following the initial workshop, Taketora will conduct live craft demonstrations at the Festival of Folk Arts from 21 to 23 August 2026. Visitors to the Buda Castle booth will observe the traditional techniques used to weave tiger bamboo flower baskets, providing a direct view of how raw natural materials are converted into durable artisanal items.
