A collaborative partnership in Fukushima Prefecture has expanded its scope and membership to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. 14 organisations, including local governments, private companies, and academic institutions, held a signing ceremony to formalise the “Circular Economy Partnership for the Promotion of Waste Recycling and Resource Recovery Technology.”

The partnership originated in February 2025 as a project focused specifically on municipal waste recycling. It forms a core component of the Soma Circular Park concept, an industrial development project in Soma City. The partnership initially included Soma City, Minamisoma City, Yamagata University, and several arterial manufacturing firms.
The updated agreement marks a strategic shift from handling only municipal waste to addressing all categories of waste and broader resource circulation. This expansion aims to strengthen the region’s capacity to manage diverse recycling needs and waste streams. Four new companies joined the existing ten members in the recent ceremony to bolster these efforts.
The partnership functions as an industry-government-academia platform. Members share technical expertise, data, and resources to develop recycling technologies. The group also conducts demonstrations and verifications to implement these systems within society, specifically targeting waste-related challenges unique to the local community.
The participants stated their commitment to contributing to a decarbonised society through the power of co-creation. The group remains open to new members to further enhance regional sustainability.
