Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force’s famed “Blue Impulse” squadron used a domestically produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) named “SUSTEO” for their exhibition flight at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix finals.
This groundbreaking fuel, presented by Euglena Co., Ltd., mixes pure bio-jet fuel, derived from both used cooking oil and oil extracted from the microalga euglena, with traditional petroleum-based jet fuel. While the combustion of “SUSTEO” emits CO2, the raw materials – plants and the euglena microalga – naturally absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. The result is a fuel that offers a carbon footprint effectively approaching zero.
This initiative marked the maiden voyage of SAF for the renowned “Blue Impulse” fleet. Approximately 5KL of “SUSTEO” was provided for both the Grand Prix finals held at Suzuka Circuit and a preceding rehearsal.
SAF, or Sustainable Aviation Fuel, integrates fuel made from sustainable raw materials with standard jet fuel. This blend not only retains the same performance characteristics of conventional fuels but also offers a tangible reduction in CO2 emissions.
Euglena Co. Ltd. has a history of eco-conscious innovation. In 2005, they pioneered a technique for large-scale outdoor cultivation of edible euglena, a microalga. Beyond food and cosmetic ventures utilizing microalgae, they’ve championed biofuel production and genetic analysis services. Their continuous efforts, including the provision of nutrient-rich euglena cookies to children in Bangladesh, underpin a corporate philosophy that champions sustainability at its core.
