crQlr Awards 2024 announces winners of circular economy solutions

The winners of crQlr Awards 2024 have been announced, celebrating 29 pioneering projects that will be showcased at the “crQlr Awards Exhibition Tokyo – Living Loops” from March 6 to March 26, at FabCafe Tokyo.

In its fourth year, the awards attracted 143 project entries from 47 countries. A panel of ten diverse professionals evaluated the submissions, recognising outstanding initiatives with personalised recognition. This year’s theme, “Towards a Circular Bioeconomy,” emphasised the fusion of nature and technology, utilising biological processes to revolutionise resource circulation and environmental conservation.

The exhibition in Tokyo will highlight these projects and reflect on the award’s contributions since its inception in 2021. Attendees will experience a dynamic space fostering dialogue, innovation, and creative problem-solving, offering inspiration for a more circular future.

One of the standout projects, the ”Return to the soil” Circular Sensors, introduces a soil sensor designed for a fully circular life cycle. Made from biodegradable cellulose nanofibers, the sensor naturally decomposes after use, eliminating electronic waste while maintaining effective environmental monitoring. Judges noted the project’s thoughtful approach to circularity, highlighting its ability to balance cutting-edge technology with ecological responsibility.

Piss Soap takes a bold approach by transforming human waste, including used cooking oil, urine, and wood ash, into a functional soap. The project shifts societal perspectives on waste, encouraging a circular economy mindset. Judges praised how it challenged taboos surrounding waste materials, noting that Piss Soap not only reduces waste but also provokes meaningful discussions on material use and sustainability.

Bio-Moon Lab merges art, science, and sustainability by cultivating luminescent bacteria to create “biolight,” an eco-friendly alternative to artificial lighting. Judge described it as a visionary challenge to traditional energy systems. By harnessing bioluminescence, Bio-Moon Lab envisions a future where lighting is both an art form and a sustainable solution.
