Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Connecting artisans and homeowners in a one-day showcase RE:CRAFT DAY

RE:CRAFT DAY in KASUGAI will return for its fourth edition on 18 May, creating a one‑day hub where everyday housing dilemmas meet hands‑on expertise.

Known locally as “RECRA”, the event lets residents speak directly with artisans whose workmanship keeps homes running smoothly. These conversations replace impersonal subcontracting chains, ensuring fair pay to craft and promoting a self‑sustaining cycle of trust, safety and local prosperity.

When organisers first surveyed homeowners in 2022, many confessed they had no idea whom to call when something went wrong. While large contractors squeezed prices, small trade firms battled erratic workloads and thinning margins. Residents, meanwhile, lost quick access to reliable support. RECRA’s remedy is a pop‑up marketplace where advice, demonstrations and bookings flow freely without middle‑men mark‑ups.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Mado Kobo Teramura, who are window frame craftspeople. Eight artisan businesses be present with their interactive booths:

  • Mado Kobo Teramura: strike‑out game built from window frames
  • Moritetsu: tile‑laying experience
  • Taguchi Shoten: hand‑stitched tatami workshop
  • Asano Toso: air‑spray painting trial
  • Minami Rei Doboku: concrete levelling practice
  • Ito Jiro Shoten: water‑tap target game
  • Sashimata: wood‑planing experience
  • Komaki Berries: introduction to electrical wiring

Together they cover windows, doors, roofs, paint, interiors, plumbing, electrics, landscaping, furniture and joinery, thus offering visitors a one‑stop route to advice and quotations.

Japan’s skilled‑trades sector is ageing fast. The average carpenter is now over 50, and nearly one in three small construction firms reports difficulty finding apprentices. RECRA is an opportunity that not only gives craftspeople direct access to local work, but also shows young people that a career in the trades is viable and respected.
