Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Coming soon! Japan’s first sustainability theme park, KURKKU FIELDS

About an hour’s drive from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo is Kisarazu, Chiba prefecture, where an organic farm and nature park “KURKKU FIELDS” will open in the fall of 2019.

Kurkku Corporation, the initiator of this unique project, is known for their socially-conscious food service. They own Italian restaurants such as “La Sora Seed” in Tokyo and the food supply network “Food Relation Network”, that focuses on environmentally-friendly agriculture and food production. With the hopes of expanding the scope of individuality and social potential, KURKKU FIELDS seeks to take a 3-dimensional approach represented by farming, food, and art.

Kurkku’s 30-hectare field is the center of this project, driven by the idea of passing on sustainable consumption and production practices to future generations. They have been growing organic vegetables and running free range poultry here for the past 9 years. Visitors can also join a variety of seasonal workshops and harvesting events throughout the year to experience a diverse ecosystem at first hand.

In addition to the sales of seasonal vegetables, Kurkku will provide freshly baked pizza, bread from house-made yeast and fluffy Chiffon cakes, made with ingredients harvested on-site. Visitors can also enjoy fresh buffalo mozzarella, as the farm is known as the only place on the mainland of Japan to raise water buffalo. By making the most of this self-sufficient food supply, Kurkku creates a beautiful harmony between humans and nature.

Moreover, Kurkku believes that art is a symbol of the surrounding environment that you can appreciate with your five senses. Various artworks will be exhibited throughout the farm and site, including Kusama Yayoi’s work that fully utilizes natural lights instead of LEDs. There will also be tiny, wooden house accommodations to provide an artistic and comfortable space for visitors.

With these concepts in mind, KURKKU FIELDS will be one of the first theme parks where visitors can explore a sustainable lifestyle while surrounded by an abundance of nature. As ethical living and humanity’s collective responsibility for future generations are becoming hot topics, they will generate more demand for an educational venue like this.
