Back Market Japan launched a new buyback service last week to provide a convenient way for consumers to trade in their used electronics. They aim for a more sustainable market for smartphones, tablets, and earphones by allowing customers to conduct online appraisals, verify their identity, and complete the buyback process directly on Back Market’s platform.
The new service marks a significant expansion for Back Market Japan, which has been focusing on selling refurbished devices since entering the Japanese market in 2021. The company now enables consumers to both purchase and sell devices on a single platform with a streamlined buyback option. It is closed-loop system encourages consumers to extend the lifecycle of their devices, promoting a circular economy.
Customers can start the buyback process by answering a few simple questions online to receive a price estimate for their device. Identity verification is completed using a driver’s license, My Number card, or residence card.
Devices can be shipped from home or through participating FamilyMart locations, with no additional shipping costs. Once Back Market receives the device, the company inspects it and informs the customer of the final buyback amount. Payments are then transferred to the customer’s designated bank account within a few business days, with Back Market covering both shipping and transfer fees.
Back Market Japan is also incentivising the service with a campaign, “End-of-Year Upgrade Support Campaign.” Till December 31, 2024, customers who complete a buyback will receive a promotional code worth ¥5,000. This code can be applied to purchases of ¥50,000 or more made on Back Market, helping users upgrade their devices at a discounted price. The promotional code, will remain valid until January 31, 2025.
