Artiql’s documentary Repair Cafe reaches 16,000 viewers across Japan

Artiql Inc. has launched a dedicated online platform for Repair Cafe, a short documentary film following the Dutch-originated movement. The launch coincides with the film surpassing 300 screenings and attracting more than 16,000 cumulative viewers and participants across Japan and overseas since its release in October 2024. The new website consolidates case studies from municipalities, corporations, educational institutions, and civic groups, alongside screening request guidelines, to support local circular economy practices.

Produced by Artiql Inc.’s web magazine IDEAS FOR GOOD, the 30-minute documentary explores the cultural and practical dimensions of extending product lifespans through community repair. The film gained international recognition following its nomination at the 9th Amsterdam Buurt Film Festival in December 2024 and subsequent screening at the Amsterdam Public Library in February 2025. In September 2025, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry selected the documentary for its Circular Economy Institute event at EXPO Messe “WASSE” during the Osaka-Kansai Expo, using it as an educational tool for younger generations.

The compact duration of the film allows organisers to pair screenings with interactive discussions and practical workshops. Japan Women’s University collaborated with Patagonia’s Worn Wear programme to host a screening for students studying sustainable fashion, aiming to make technical concepts personally relevant. The event sparked candid discussions regarding garment longevity and aesthetic appeal, ultimately leading students to establish upcycling workshops and launch independent repair projects.

Similarly, a November 2024 screening organised by waste education company Gomi no Gakko Co., Ltd. in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, led directly to the establishment of the region’s first community repair space at Circular Kameoka Lab in December 2024, which continues to operate with municipal backing.

Establishing physical spaces and institutional support for repair remains essential for Japan to transition from concept to resource stewardship, and documentaries like Repair Cafe offers the opportunity for communities to take that first step.
