Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores has collected approximately 700 garments for its clothing upcycling project, “roop.” Runned by the company’s fashion subscription service AnotherADdress, it gives customers’ pre-owned clothing to emerging designers to create new pieces that will be offered on the rental platform.
The project operates on the themes of reducing waste, extending the life of clothes, and passing on skills. It aims to create a new circular model for fashion by taking memorable items that customers no longer wear and having them reborn through upcycling. The initiative is supported by a subsidy from the Japanese Ministry of the Environment’s “Decokatsu” programme, which promotes decarbonisation and sustainable lifestyles.

Since July, AnotherADdress has collected around 700 items of clothing from its members and at special events. In early September, material selection meetings were held at the Osaka Institute of Fashion and the Daimaru Matsuzakaya head office in Tokyo. At these events, around 100 fashion students and designers who passed a preliminary screening selected the garments they will use to create their new works. This stage marks the beginning of the production process.
The project schedule includes a submission deadline for the finished pieces at the end of November 2025. A series of judging rounds will follow, beginning with a public vote in January 2026 and culminating in a final runway show presentation in March 2026. The completed upcycled garments will then be made available for rent through the AnotherADdress service, connecting the stories of the original clothes with new wearers.
