KOKO HOTEL Hida Takayama will be hosting a sustainable fashion show on 7 August, featuring clothing upcycled from discarded items. The show is a collaboration between local students, government bodies, and welfare organisations to promote circularity and social inclusion.

The garments for the show will come from two sources. These include items collected in recycling boxes installed within the hotel and clothing from the lost property department that has exceeded its storage period. Students from the Lifestyle Design Department at Gifu Prefectural Hida Takayama High School are responsible for the redesign and upcycling of these materials as part of their curriculum.

Twelve individuals with intellectual disabilities will serve as models for the runway. Their participation is facilitated through Takayama City’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) partner programme. Local businesses also support the initiative, with a staffing agency providing cleaning services for the collected clothes and a cosmetics company handling the models’ make-up.
This initiative is part of the “FEEL THE LOCAL” project promoted by KOKO HOTELS across Japan. The programme aims to strengthen regional ties and create new value through community-based activities. Shinichi Okuda, General Manager of KOKO HOTEL Hida Takayama, stated that the project aims to provide a platform for student creativity and social participation for people with disabilities.
