Nature positive forest project to launch at Tochigi ranch

Shin-Mirai Co., Ltd. is a company focused on sustainable forest management, and they have announced a new nature positive project at Nasu Senbonmatsu Ranch in Tochigi Prefecture. It would integrates forest maintenance, biodiversity research, and environmental education into a experience programme scheduled to begin in autumn 2026. This project is also a part of the ranch owner to transform natural capital into sustainable tourism value.

The ranch owner, Horai Co., Ltd., aims to evolve its operations by protecting and utilising natural capital, including forests and farmland. It wants to create a field where nature and people coexist by converting these assets into experiences, learning opportunities, and leisure activities. The project focuses on four key areas which are forest management and biodiversity experiences, satoyama restoration, the advancement of circular dairy farming, and the construction of a forest ecosystem.

The initiative involves a three-year partnership with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC Group). Under this agreement, the project site is designated as the Nasu Senbonmatsu Ranch Nature Positive Field presented by SMBC Group. The partnership builds on a previous memorandum of understanding regarding cooperation in circular dairy and forestry. The ranch attracts approximately 1.15 million visitors annually, providing a significant platform for raising public awareness about biodiversity and sustainable land use.

Shin-Mirai leads the forest experience and timber utilisation components of the project. The company collaborates with local partners, including Aoba-gumi Co., Ltd. and the Takahara Forest Association, to manage red pine satoyama forests and cedar plantations. The plan includes harvesting timber and replanting areas with vegetation that closely resembles natural satoyama environments.

Nasu Senbonmatsu Ranch has a history of over 130 years and already practices circular dairy farming. Following a grand reopening in April 2025, the ranch will offer various activities such as the Senbonmatsu Terrace and a four-kilometre cycling course. The new nature positive project adds a layer of environmental stewardship to these attractions.
