Tests to simplify household product recycling in Kobe with new app

digglue Inc. will be introducing a web application aimed at making recycling easier for consumers in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. In collaboration with Lion Corporation, the app will determine whether used refill packs for household products can be recycled, simply by scanning a barcode with a smartphone. This collaboration is part of an effort to boost recycling rates and promote eco-friendly consumption behaviors.

Kobe City has implemented a collection and recycling program for used refill packs of household products since October 2021. However, due to the diversity of materials used and product contents, not all refill packs are suitable for recycling. Identifying recyclability by visual inspection alone is challenging, as it is labor-intensive and time-consuming in manual sorting processes after collection.

The new web application is intended to address these issues by simplifying the process for consumers. The app currently supports 1,480 products from 12 different manufacturers, including Lion Corporation. By scanning the product’s barcode (JAN code), users can instantly determine if a refill pack is recyclable. For non-recyclable products, the app provides instructions on appropriate disposal methods. digglue will join a local city event on 24 November to demonstrate how it works.

digglue intends to expand its scope to other product categories beyond household products across a variety of sectors. Additionally, the app will be integrated with digglue’s “CiReta!” platform, which encourages environmentally friendly actions by providing users with comprehensive environmental information about various products. The integration with the “CiReta!” platform will serve as a foundation for creating a Digital Product Passport.
