Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Neco Republic envisions Gifu woodland homes turned into cat sanctuaries

A crowdfunding campaign to aid a cat café’s rescue efforts in Gifu has raised 5 million yen within its first week. This nationwide backing aims to convert a spacious woodland home into a sanctuary for felines that would otherwise face euthanasia.

The campaign, hosted by “For Good,” a platform managed by Borderless Japan Corporation, was initiated by Neco Republic Corporation. Their initial fundraising target was set at 15 million yen. Impressively, a third of this amount was achieved in just seven days, reflecting the widespread compassion for this cause.

Founded in 2014 in Gifu City, Neco Republic has always championed the end of cat euthanasia. Their operations, inspired by the aspiration to guarantee every cat a safe and satisfying life, encompass rescue cat cafes, shelters, events, dedicated brands, and online retail. With 15 facilities across Japan, their endeavors range from cafes and shelters to brand stores. The current crowdfunding project is an extension of their established mission, aiming to broaden their facilities and reinforce their dedication to a future free of feline euthanasia.

On-the-ground reports from the Gifu branch of Neco Republic detail persistent checks with local health centers. Their weekly routine involves verifying if any new cats have been taken in. Unfortunately, there is a continual influx of kittens, either born in the wild or given up by their owners. Many of these rescued cats are found with severe health conditions, such as lymphoma or kidney failure. In traditional circumstances, these cats would not be eligible for adoption and would inevitably face euthanasia. However, the ethos at Neco Republic revolves around the belief that every life is of equal worth. Their commitment goes beyond rescue, providing medical care and ensuring the cats’ overall well-being.

Their eyes are now set on acquiring a sizeable property, a 1,500 tsubo (about 4,950 square meters) plot nestled within a forest. Located a mere 20-minute drive from the existing Neco Republic Gifu branch, this expansive land is surprisingly available at a very competitive price, setting the stage for its transformation into a haven for cats in need.
