Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Sustainable shoe transformation: Indigo dyeing at Allbirds Osaka

This October, Allbirds Osaka in Grand Front Osaka is set to host a unique indigo dyeing workshop, previously a hit in Tokyo. The two-day event on October 14-15 will be spearheaded by “Watanabe’s,” a renowned indigo master and dyer from Tokushima.

The workshop offers attendees an exclusive opportunity to dye their cherished Allbirds shoes with deep and vibrant hues from the natural indigo, derived from the Japanese indigo plants nurtured by the master dyer himself.

Kenta Watanabe, originally from Yamagata Prefecture and currently based in Tokushima’s Kamiita Town, a recognized hotspot for Awa indigo cultivation, has devoted himself to the entirety of the indigo creation process. From cultivating the plant, making sukumo (the fermented indigo), to the actual dyeing, Watanabe integrates both the age-old Japanese traditions with contemporary techniques.

One of the event’s highlights is the sustainable notion of breathing new life into beloved shoes that might have seen better days. This approach aligns with the broader sustainable movement of reducing waste and promoting prolonged use of cherished items.

Despite being a pre-booking event, organizers have hinted at potential slots for on-the-day registrations, urging Allbirds enthusiasts to bring along their favorite pairs and immerse themselves in the world of indigo dyeing. Bookings are available on their registration page.

The event not only promises a hands-on experience but also offers insights into the rich culture surrounding natural indigo, a tradition deeply embedded in Japanese heritage.
