Panasonic introduces rental service for sustainable pharmaceutical transport

Panasonic Corporation is set to launch a rental service of their vacuum insulated cool box, VIXELL, starting July 5. This innovative service targets the intricate transportation requirements of pharmaceuticals and clinical trial drugs, which often necessitate strict temperature control.

Until now, pharmaceuticals have been traditionally transported with temperature-controlled coolants housed within cool boxes. However, once transportation is completed, the logistical and financial burdens make it impractical to return used coolants, cool boxes, and temperature loggers to their origin. This leads to their disposal after a single use, creating an environmental strain and occasionally risking product damage due to inadequate box robustness.

Panasonic’s rental service disrupts this norm by allowing one-way transportation from Japan to overseas destinations, followed by overseas collection and subsequent reuse of the VIXELL boxes. Utilizing Panasonic and its partner companies’ comprehensive logistics network, the new service underscores a commitment to a circular, sustainable approach.

Adding to its allure, the service offers customers the convenience of using the robust VIXELL box, akin to a disposable cool box. This aids in the construction of a waste-free mechanism, contributing to the circular economy.

Moreover, Panasonic’s service comes with added options, such as pre-freezing of coolants, and collection and reuse of temperature loggers. Remote data collection by real-time monitoring temperature loggers is also an available option, catering to the strict temperature-controlled transportation requirements.

Initially, the service will be offered for cargo destined for Europe and the United States, with an expansion of the coverage area planned for the future.
