Hokkaido Police turn to YouTube to combat rise in gang extortion

In response to a surge in organized crime demanding protection money from local businesses, the Hokkaido Prefectural Police have taken to YouTube to educate the public on how to handle such threats.

According to the National Police Agency, there were 46 reported instances of gang members threatening businesses for protection money in Japan in 2022, up until late November. This figure represents a threefold increase from the previous year and is twice the five-year average. Of these cases, 20 occurred in Takikawa City alone.

In a proactive move to combat this growing issue, the Hokkaido Prefectural Police released an instructional video last month. The video, which was scripted, acted, filmed, and edited by the police force itself, has already amassed over 360,000 views and has been featured in Japanese media.

The video, though less than eight minutes in length, provides clear and concise instructions for business owners on how to respond when confronted by gang members demanding protection money. It offers both correct and incorrect examples of responses, effectively utilizing social media as a tool for public safety and education.

The Hokkaido Prefectural Police’s innovative approach to this issue underscores the potential of social media as a platform for public service announcements and crime prevention.
