4 ways to access sanitary products for sudden periods in Japan

Feeling discomfort in an intimate area often leads one to rush to the toilet, only to realize that their period has come unexpectedly. Many women have experienced this unpredictability at least once in their lives. Those with irregular periods are especially prone to being caught off guard. Research indicates that nearly 80% of reproductive-age women have experienced trouble with menstrual irregularities.

In instances of sudden periods, many are unprepared and must resort to using toilet paper in an emergency. The situation leaves them anxious about staining their clothes for the remainder of the day. However, there are some ways to quickly obtain sanitary pads in Japan.

Period pad dispenser

In Japan, you often see the period pad dispenser in the women’s restroom in public facilities such as shopping malls and concert halls. You can purchase a set of two pads by inserting coins (the price is 100 Japanese yen).

This machine supports women’s wellness and its demand rose due to increased awareness of female health and well-being in society.

Period-related application

Have you ever wondered why period products are not installed in every toilet, although menstruation is a biological function just like urination? Toreluna, created by Next Innovation Inc. and OiTr Inc. and aiming for a more women-centered society, has launched dispensers for free period pads.

To receive free menstrual hygiene products from them is simple: download and use their applications in toilets, following the instructions. These companies hope that providing free period products will become normal and help reduce stress and anxiety among reproductive-age women.

Selective items in convenience stores

One of the most accessible ways to obtain menstrual hygiene products is by visiting convenience stores. There, you can find a small selection of products. For instance, you can purchase a set of three pads for emergencies. They also sell period panties in many cases.

DyDo has innovated a female-centric vending machine

Beverage vending machines are ubiquitous in Japan. DyDo DRINCO, INC., a company working with domestic beverages and vending machines, has innovated a female-centric vending machine in collaboration with G-Place Corporation, a producer of period pads. Through this machine, you can buy a set of two winged pads.

The machine was developed in response to women’s potential needs and the necessity to purchase an adequate amount of pads on the spot. Plans are underway to install these vendors in stations and shopping complexes to meet demand.
