World’s first hydrogen sauna to debut by Harvia and Toyota

Harvia Plc, a leader in the sauna and spa market, and Toyota Motor Corporation have jointly developed a concept model for a hydrogen-powered sauna, marking it as a world first according to research by the two companies. It combines Harvia’s expertise in sauna manufacturing with Toyota’s advanced hydrogen combustion technology. The new concept model is scheduled for introduction and public demonstration at two events in Jyväskylä, Finland, this year.

Hydrogen is known as an energy source that emits no CO2 when used. Applied to the use in a sauna stove, hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour and warm air, offering an alternative to conventional heating methods. The design of the hydrogen sauna stove aims to replicate the essence of a traditional smoke sauna, known for its soft and pleasant heat. Hydrogen flames and warm air pass through the sauna stones, heating them evenly from all directions and producing the characteristic “löyly”, the Finnish term for the comforting steam created when water is ladled onto hot stones.

Timo Harvia, Head of Innovation and Technology at Harvia, stated: “This collaboration with Toyota allows us to challenge sauna innovation and demonstrate our commitment to environmental responsibility. Toyota’s profound knowledge of hydrogen combustion technology enabled us to safely and efficiently utilise hydrogen as a clean energy source. This realises a new sauna experience that respects tradition while looking to the future.”

Mitsumasa Yamagata, President of Toyota’s Hydrogen Factory, commented on the project’s origins: “Jyväskylä is an important region where Toyota and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team (TGR-WRT) have cooperated for many years. This project is an extension of the trusting relationship with the local community, built under the strong initiative of Chairman Akio Toyoda,” Yamagata said. He added: “The Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) facilitated the connection between Toyota and Harvia. Encountering Harvia’s sincere approach to manufacturing has been a great encouragement, and I strongly believe in the potential of the hydrogen sauna to pioneer the future of hydrogen use.”

Toyota positions hydrogen as a crucial energy source and is advancing various initiatives with partners across hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and use. The automotive giant believe is a future of a hydrogen-based society.
