Winter wardrobe upgrade: Japanese sustainable brands for jackets and sweaters

Winter is approaching, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy layering outfits! Are you in search of sustainable, stylish jackets or sweaters to keep warm? Here is a list of Japanese sustainable apparel brands offering various options for a cozy winter!

Vegan puffer jacket made with 100% Kapok fibers by CRAFSTO

The sustainable, genderless fashion brand, CRAFSTO, is offering vegan puffer jackets in three different colors this winter. These jackets are made with Kapok fibers, also known as Java cotton or ceiba. In recent years, Kapok has gained increased awareness as an eco-friendly material, serving as a substitute for original down. The reason why Kapok is eco-friendly is that it is obtained from the seed pods or seed hairs of the kapok tree, which means there is no need to cut down trees. In terms of touch and functionality, Kapok is as soft and heat-retaining as traditional down jackets.

The brand firmly believes that long-term use is the most sustainable practice. They are dedicated to producing highly durable, simply designed clothing that customers can cherish for a lifetime, regardless of their gender or age. These puffer jackets demonstrate this dedication.

Upcycled cashmere sweaters with unique design by Takashimaya

In November 2021, Takashimaya, one of the largest department store chains, launched a project to collect used clothing and upcycle them into new items. As a part of the third-year challenge for this initiative, they collaborated with students from Bunka Fashion College to create five distinct pieces of cashmere sweaters.

The goal of this project was to produce stylish cashmere wear at a reasonable price, targeting the younger generation, by upcycling discarded cashmere items. Cashmere is often perceived as a luxury material with a high price tag. These uniquely designed pieces, crafted by young talents, spice up your winter outfits.

A wide selection of ethical winter clothing by CASA FLINE

CASA FLINE, a sustainable and ethical fashion brand, prioritizes eco-friendliness and ethical practices in the creation of each item. For instance, they primarily use natural, environmentally-friendly materials to minimize the negative impact on the environment and utilize redundant materials to achieve zero-waste production.

They focus not only on the products themselves but also on the well-being of the producers and local traditions. To revitalize local industries and preserve traditional techniques, they actively collaborate with both domestic and international craftsmen. Additionally, each clothing tag indicates the sustainable and ethical aspects of the item, providing customers with a clear understanding of why they should choose it.

This season, CASA FLINE offers a variety of winter clothing items including jackets, coats, blousons and sweaters made from recycled, upcycled or natural materials. As I personally believe that long-term use is one of the best sustainable practices, the vest featured above is a definite must-have. It is reversible and matches both casual and chic style. Not only does it reduce waste, but there’s also a certain joy in layering to create diverse looks with the same piece. You’re sure to find it to be a fantastic addition to your wardrobe.
