What does GOTS-certified cotton mean?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a worldwide textile production certification that ensures the quality of organic fibers. GOTS is known as the world’s strictest textile standard as it assesses all processors, manufacturers and traders for their ecological and labor conditions.

One of the key environmental criteria is the prohibition of toxic and hazardous chemical inputs at any stage of the process. Therefore, under GOTS, farmers can’t use synthetic pesticides or herbicides to grow fibers such as cotton. At manufacturing sites, fibers must be treated without toxic dyes or bleach. These criteria also promote the creation of a safe working environment for textile workers. GOTS also supports fair working conditions, where workers are fairly treated in terms of wages, working hours and opportunities.

The verification is done by professional, independent certification bodies through annual on-site inspections, providing credibility and transparency to consumers. Thus, GOTS-certified cotton guarantees the highest ethical standard and quality products.
