Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Wellness tourism: discover Aomori’s nature trails, hot springs and new retreat

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto might be the first places that come to mind. However, if you’ve already visited these cities or are looking for something different from typical travel guides, consider Aomori Prefecture for your next destination.

Although Aomori is known for its famous summer Nebuta festival, Aomori offers much more, including beautiful nature, onsen (hot springs) and delicious food. Also, Aomori is perfect for wellness tourism, where you can soothe your body and mind.

Enjoy a nature walk at Oirase Gorge

Oirase Gorge is a 14 km hiking trail, recognized as a special scenic spot and nature reserve. It’s full of attractions along the way and relatively easy to walk. You can experience different landscapes throughout the year such as lush greenery in spring and summer, colorful leaves during fall and snowy wonderland in winter.

Personally, I love the early summer, especially just after the rain. Although the trails might be muddy, the raindrops sparkling on the plants add an extra touch of depth to the greenery. Breath deeply, and let the natural scents and sounds of waterfalls and birds soothe your body and mind.

This inn features a free-flowing natural hot spring, which is rare in Japan. The hot water flows from the bottom of the bathtub without being exposed to the air. A private hot spring is also available, allowing you to enjoy quality time with your friends and family in complete privacy.

With many traditional Aomori crafts in the rooms, and Japanese course meals using local ingredients, this is an ideal place for those who want to heal their body and mind in a Zen treat while experiencing an authentic atmosphere.
