VUILD’s ‘Learning Architecture’ Wins Prestigious iF Design Gold Award

Japanese design-tech firm VUILD Inc. has received the iF Design Gold Award for its project, “The Learning Architecture for Learners.” The educational facility at Tokyo Gakugei University was one of only 75 gold winners selected from approximately 11,000 entries worldwide, and one of just three architectural works to receive the highest honour in 2025.

The iF Design Award, established in 1954 by Germany’s iF International Forum Design GmbH, is a globally recognised authority in design. The jury praised the winning project for its innovative use of materials. “The Learning Architecture for Learners pavilion is stunningly innovative,” the jury commented. “It combines concrete and wood to create a dynamic space that positively invites interaction.”

The project is an education incubation facility constructed to explore next-generation learning. The design utilises CNC (computer numerical control)-milled timber panels as permanent formwork for the concrete, which remain as both a structural and finishing element of the final building. The jury noted this feature, stating the project “celebrates the importance of using familiar materials to create something thought-provoking and new.” They described the result as “Breathtaking!”

The facility is designed as an open-ended building that users can adapt and expand over time. It houses the very CNC machine that was used to create its components, making advanced manufacturing technology accessible to all. This aligns with a vision of architecture that is never truly complete. An iF Trend Report highlighted this concept, explaining, “The idea of ‘architecture without planning and without completion’ is not simply to complete a building, but to provide a place that changes and evolves as needed.”

This award recognises a shift in architecture towards creating dynamic environments for active learning, rather than static spaces for passive instruction. VUILD has created a structure that embodies the educational process itself by making the building process transparent and the tools for its modification available. The iF report adds that through this approach, “Education is seen as a means to build a richer future through creative thinking and practice, rather than just the transmission of knowledge.”
