Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

United Card, the last business card we’ll ever need

Exchanging business cards is big business in Japan. 59.4% of business persons collect and store physical business cards in files or specialized name card boxes. A survey also showed that a businessperson in Tokyo exchanges 317 name cards on average every year.

LLC TheFourSeasons is challenging the need for analog name cards. While the country is re-evaluating its use of plastic, TheFourSeasons is interested in tackling the use of paper too.

TheFourSeasons is introducing the United Card. If the card receives a wide adoption rate, it could very well be the last business card businesspersons will need. The card uses NFC technology, so there is little fuss in passing the name card information. It is easy to use, as the receiver will only need to bring their smartphones near, and their devices will load the card’s registered information in a browser. The card’s design is also accessible to anyone regardless of age and gender.

Furthermore, unlimited updates in information can be made readily, unlike traditional name cards when reprints are required every time a single detail is changed. The card can currently carry eight information to share:

  1. Profile picture/ Cover picture
  2. Name (in Japanese and English), Designation
  3. Introduction
  4. Work (including company name and job title)
  5. Education (including school name and specialization)
  6. Address and region
  7. Skills & Qualifications
  8. Contact Information (including social network accounts, contact number and email)

This solution to sustainable business cards doesn’t need any app downloads or monthly subscription fees. The one-time fee and ease of use make it appealing for anyone thinking of making a switch to a sustainable option.

The United Cards are currently available in eight colors, purchasable from online only at this point. Each card will cost 3,300 yen (an additional 550yen to print a company name on the card). (We are still waiting word on whether the card is paper- or plastic-based, and will update as soon as we get a response.)

TheFourSeasons is planning to expand the use to F&B establishments and salons where menus often change contents. These are where paper is used, which is perfect for TheFourSeasons to get involved.
