Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), in collaboration with its subsidiaries and TRE Holdings Corporation, has launched a project to demonstrate the effectiveness of panel reuse. Repurposing decommissioned solar panels may become a practical solution to the growing problem of solar waste.
At TRE’s Mibu facility in Tochigi Prefecture, a self-consumption solar power system will incorporate both new and reused panels. Scheduled to begin operations in August 2025, this demonstration will attempt to validate the ability of reused panels to generate reliable power in secondary applications, extending their lifespan and minimising waste.
The refurbishment process involves comprehensive testing to ensure the safety and efficiency of the panels. By successfully integrating reused panels, the project advances circular economy principles, focusing on reducing waste and conserving valuable resources. Alongside the environmental benefits, it also presents economic opportunities by unlocking the residual value of decommissioned solar panels.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights the growing volume of end-of-life solar panels and the need for sustainable waste management. IRENA estimates that by 2050, the total stock of solar panel waste could reach 78 million tonnes. Repurposing panels through projects like Toshiba’s is a needed solution to address this challenge.
Ultimately, extending the lifespan of solar panels allows us to mitigate environmental harm and support the transition to a circular economy. Perhaps this would offer us the next step of revolution following the news of renewables accounting for over 90% of global power expansion in 2024.
