In recent years, more options for period products have been available. In Japan, where pads are mainstream, period underwear has recently become more popular because it saves the time of changing pads and reduces the risk of leaking in environments where one cannot go to the bathroom for hours. In addition, menstrual discs have recently arrived in Japan and are starting to gather attention.

What is a menstrual disc?

A menstrual disc, also called a period disc, is an insertable period product invented in the US in 2016. It is similar to a menstrual cup but is usually thinner and offers more holding capacity. Both disposable and reusable options are available.

The greatest feature is that it feels more comfortable than a menstrual cup or tampon, and you can barely feel it while wearing it. It is because menstrual discs sit higher, right under the cervix, which has a high pain threshold, while menstrual cups stay close to the vaginal opening. Although it may be more difficult to insert than a menstrual cup at first, many people say it is more convenient once they are used to it.

Menstrual discs are still rarely found in pharmacies or supermarkets in Japan, but some brands offer them through online stores. Here are three brands available in Japan.

Uusina is a Japanese brand that offers reusable menstrual discs and cups. Their discs are made from ultra-thin medical-grade silicone, with a small size holding 42ml and a large size holding 68ml. It can be used for up to 12 hours.

To disinfect and reuse an Uusina disc, prepare a sterilizing container to sterilize it in a microwave. If you are looking for a zero waste period product, this is a great option.
