Tackling farming decline with gacha-style agricultural vending machines

An operator of the used farm equipment retailer Nokigu-Ou is turning heads with an unusual attraction: an agricultural gacha. The aim is to use this agriculture vending machine as a tool to alleviate the problems of Japan’s declining agricultural population.

Branded the “Agricultural Machinery Vending Machine,” the project merges the practical world of farming with the playful appeal of gacha culture—a capsule toy system popular in Japan. Customers insert money, receive a capsule containing a number, and unlock a corresponding locker to retrieve a surprise item. Contents range from tools and machinery to novelty agricultural goods, making it a fun and unpredictable experience.

The design caters to professional farmers but also attracts DIY enthusiasts, curious newcomers to farming, and families with children. It has even drawn collectors of Tomica toy cars.

The concept was imagined by Nokigu-Ou, which wants to make agriculture more approachable and enjoyable for everyone. The ageing and declining agricultural workforce continues to challenge the industry, and this agriculture gacha is an imaginative way to engage new audiences.

Nokigu-Ou plans to roll out similar vending machines across its 33 stores nationwide. The company is also exploring partnerships with community events and user-led campaigns to foster deeper connections between agriculture and local communities.
