Tabe Choku to support fishermen affected by ALPS water release

With the discharge of ALPS treated water causing ripples of concern in Japan’s fishing industry, Vivid Garden Inc., the operator of the direct-to-consumer food sales site “Tabe Choku,” has taken swift action to bolster the livelihoods of affected fishermen.

The company initiated its “#魚介を食べて応援 プログラム (#SupportByEatingSeafood)” program on Aug 25, offering expedited payments and prioritized reviews for impacted fishermen. The program also benefits consumers by offering a 500-yen discount per seafood order from Aug 31 to Sept 30.

While the full extent of the environmental impact is yet to be ascertained, the economic implications for fishermen are already a significant concern. According to a recent survey conducted by Vivid Garden, over 60% of fishermen are either presently affected or anticipate future effects due to the ALPS treated water release and the halt of exports to China.

Besides economic challenges, fishermen also face the hazard of reputational damage. The same survey revealed that nearly 60% of consumers express concerns about the quality and safety of local seafood, underlining the need for initiatives to bridge the gap between fishermen and consumers.

“The aim is not merely financial assistance but to foster a sense of community and shared responsibility,” said a spokesperson for Vivid Garden. The company believes that collective action, like their discount program, can dispel consumer fears while practically aiding fishermen.

The support from Vivid Garden also addresses a steady decline in fish consumption rates in Japan, dropping from 40.2 kg per person in 2001 to just 23.2 kg in 2021. The need to sustain domestic seafood consumption is more pressing than ever, adding another layer of importance to the program.
