Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Sustainable Development Goals SDGs Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

What is SDGs Goal 9?

SDGs Goal 9 is “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” with its mission statement being “build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.”

This goal has 8 targets and 12 indicators measuring the progress of countries’ development globally. Targets include having a reliable infrastructure to support the economy and people’s well-being, the implementation of clean technologies and increased access to information and communications technology.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure in Japan

According to the SDG Index, Japan has already achieved its goals in innovation and infrastructure. As a developed country with an early start in developing resilient infrastructure, promoting industrialization and fostering innovation, this is an area that Japan excels in and should maintain as we head towards 2030.

Rediscovering Japan’s circular Astragalus rice farming

The advancement of technology (chemical fertilizer) and mass consumption makes us question how sustainable modern farming is, mainly because of the adverse effects on the environment and society.

Farming remains a vital role in Japan. While most farmers strive to attain sustainable agriculture, some are already using sustainable renge farming, which involves extracting honey from astragalus flowers as a natural fertilizer.

Yumenoshima: Tokyo’s fly-infested landfill became green oasis

Many would not think that Yumenoshima, meaning “Dream Island,” was once a landfill that had a fly outbreak. The transformation is an excellent example of turning an environmental problem into an environmentally positive, while providing utilization for society.

How Japan is helping developing countries through agricultural assistance

With its knowledge and technology, Japan is reaching out to other countries that may require assistance in developing their industries. Of course, Japan’s farming knowledge is put to significant effect here, like helping South Sudan develop an agriculture master plan and helping local Turkish communities to develop new food and agricultural sources of income.
