Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Siamam series harnesses rice bran for sustainable skincare

A new “Siamam” line of sustainable skincare products was unveiled last week, derived from the rice bran of their unique Hokkaido Mizubasho Rice, available in stores in Hokkaido, Kanagawa, Chiba, and online.

This move signifies a novel collaboration between rice farmers and a longstanding cosmetics company, who have spent over a century studying the beauty benefits of rice bran. The new line shows Japan’s age-old love affair with rice, a relationship reflected in the name “Siamam”, an Ainu word for rice. The products present a symbiotic blend of traditional agricultural practices with contemporary skincare needs, rooting the skincare industry closer to nature.

Rice bran, a byproduct often treated as industrial waste, contains over 40 types of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and unique rice components, all of which have found a home in Siamam’s products. As the world grows more conscious of sustainable practices, the cosmetics line underscores its eco-friendly commitment, not only in its contents but also its packaging. Siamam skincare containers are made from recyclable glass and environmentally-friendly Smart Papier®, emphasizing the company’s pledge to reduce waste.

Furthermore, the line is free from additives: no fragrance, coloring, mineral oils, or parabens – a testament to the brand’s dedication to quality and a cleaner planet. The company’s diligence extends to the hygienic conditions in which the products are made, where inspection processes align with both the cosmetic GMP standards and their own.

The company believes this new venture helps them live up to their responsibility as producers and contributes to a more sustainable future, thereby revitalizing an industry often criticized for its environmental impact. This skincare line underscores the potential of a collaborative approach between disparate sectors – agriculture and beauty – demonstrating that through cooperation, an innovative and sustainable future is achievable.
