Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Product reviews: Environmentally friendly and highly effective sunscreen available in Japan

Spending time camping, hiking, having barbecues, playing in rivers and enjoying the beach allows us to immerse our senses in nature. It’s a delightful experience that brings joy to both the mind and body. However, staying outdoors for extended periods raises concerns about the damage it may cause to our skin. That’s why the author, who frequently visits mountains and beaches, will introduce two outstanding sunscreens that are not only environmentally friendly but also highly effective and convenient to use. The author personally tested these sunscreens, and can confidently say, “These are great!”

What impact does sunscreen have on the environment?

Currently, the issue of coral bleaching is causing coral reefs to die and turn completely white. One of the causes of this phenomenon is the presence of “oxybenzone” and “ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate)” in many sunscreens sold in Japan. These ingredients have already been banned in Hawaii and Palau. Since all water eventually reaches the sea through rivers, it is advisable to refrain from using sunscreens containing such components even in mountainous areas.

Picking the right sunscreen for outdoor adventures: 3 tips

However, if you don’t apply sunscreen, your skin will accumulate damage from UV rays, which can lead to future issues like spots, wrinkles and sagging. What criteria then should you consider when choosing a sunscreen? We have compiled a set of standards to help you determine if sunscreen has a high level of effectiveness as well as being environmentally friendly for use in the sea or mountains.

  1. Products that do not contain “oxybenzone” and “ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate),” which have a negative impact on coral.
  2. Products that have the following descriptions or logos on their packaging or labels to demonstrate low environmental impact: “No UV Absorbers (紫外線吸収剤不使用),” “Non-Chemical (ノンケミカル)” or “Reef Safe (サンゴ礁に安全).” Look for “ECOCERT” and “Protect Land + Sea Certified” logos.
*Not all of the above descriptions or logos need to be present.
  3. Products with high values of “SPF” (Sun Protection Factor) and “PA” (Protection Grade of UVA) to effectively shield the skin from strong UV rays. As a guideline, look for SPF 50 or higher and PA+++ or higher.

We checked out these sunscreens: Reviews and real-life experiences

Let’s take a look at two outdoor sunscreens that the author, who loves mountain climbing and frequently goes to the sea and rivers with their family, personally uses and which meet all the criteria mentioned above. Along with usage experience reports, you can read detailed introductions for these sunscreens.

Super convenient “OUTDOOR UV

OUTDOOR UV is a stick-type sunscreen specifically developed for outdoor use. It has a size slightly larger than a lipstick. With SPF50+ and PA+++, it provides high sun protection.

When we contacted the manufacturer to inquire about the impact on nature, such as the sea and mountains, we received the following response:

“Regarding mountains and rivers, our product is non-chemical and does not contain any synthetic ingredients, considering both the environment and the skin. It is formulated to be ocean-friendly (without UV absorbers), so you can use it with peace of mind.”

The other day, when I used it while climbing a mountain, I was amazed by the convenience of reapplying sunscreen with just one hand. It was also convenient to carry it in a small pocket of my backpack. Moreover, it gives me confidence as it is scented with peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils, which are known to have insect-repellent effects. Although it is a waterproof formula, it’s helpful that it can be easily removed with soap after use.

OUTDOOR UV fulfills most of my expectations, but if I had one request, it would be for the container to be made of recycled plastic or biodegradable material. By the way, I was so impressed by its convenience when I used it on the mountain that I now keep it in my everyday shoulder bag and apply it whenever I remember. Truth be told, I struggle to use up a whole bottle of sunscreen, but I have a feeling I’ll be able to use this sunscreen to the last drop!

No more plastic bottles, “ADVENTURE SPORT” by Badger

(Image: Life Hugger)
I discovered Badger sunscreen, a natural cosmetic brand from the United States while doing an online search. It contains 98% organic ingredients, and the container is a can. It has received third-party certification called “Protect Land + Sea Certified,” which proves its commitment to protecting the sea and mountains. The label also states “Reef Friendly.” Designed for outdoor use, it is a waterproof formula with SPF50 so you can trust its effectiveness as a sunscreen.

The actual texture is a slightly firm cream. I take a small amount on my hand, warm it up with body heat, and then apply it to my skin. It gives a strong sense of adherence to the skin, so it seems ideal to apply it before going to the mountains or the sea. In my case, I apply this sunscreen in the morning before mountain climbing, treating it like a makeup primer, and then reapply the OUTDOOR UV stick sunscreen during the climb.

If I were to mention a minor drawback, it would be that it cannot be easily removed with just soap and requires thorough cleansing. Additionally, it is not widely available in Japan yet. I purchased it from iHerb, an online platform that offers a wide range of organic cosmetics and supplements, so if you’re interested, you can check it out there.
