New IoT model secures safe resource circulation for batteries in Chiba

SATO Corporation and Re-Tem Corporation have partnered with Chiba City to launch a resource circulation model for lithium ion batteries using IoT technology. It commenced earlier this month, deploying smart collection boxes designed to recover small rechargeable batteries and battery-embedded products safely.

The surge in mobile batteries and small electronic devices has led to a significant increase in battery waste. Many of these items contain rare metals and valuable resources that require proper recovery to support a circular economy. Furthermore, the Japanese government will enforce the amended Act on the Promotion of Effective Utilization of Resources in April 2026. This legislation mandates that manufacturers and retailers of products such as smartphones and heated tobacco devices take responsibility for collection and recycling, prompting municipalities to establish robust recovery systems.

However, improper battery disposal leads to fire accidents in waste collection vehicles and processing facilities. The new collection boxes feature integrated temperature and distance sensors developed through the technical expertise of SATO Corporation. These sensors allow operators to visualise the fill level and internal temperature of each box in real time. By monitoring these metrics, the partners aim to prevent fire risks and optimise collection logistics through data-driven management. In addition, these boxes are designed and manufactured to ensure long-term operational stability.

Eight collection points are currently active across Chiba City, including the City Hall, various ward offices, and the Aeon Marine Pia shopping centre. While Chiba City manages the daily operation and public awareness of these sites, Re-Tem Corporation oversees the actual processing and recycling of the collected materials.
