Mystic Forest turns waste into immersive public art in Tokyo

ACTA PLUS will hold “Mystic Forest,” a public art exhibition featuring installations constructed from waste materials, at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu from 21 February to 5 March.

By using discarded materials as artistic media, the project seeks to prompt visitors to reconsider the nature of resource consumption and the future of human activity over the next century. The exhibition will be situated in Yaesu, a district that was a cultural hub during the Edo period. Historically, this area was central to a society that practised a “waste-free lifestyle” based on the effective circulation of limited resources.

Under the slogan “Turning the logic of sustainability into aspiration,” ACTA PLUS designed the exhibition as a walk-through installation where visitors navigate a “forest” of waste-derived art. The experience incorporates shifts in light, shadow, and sound to encourage individual reflection on the potential for a circular society.

Three artists with distinct backgrounds contribute to the installation. Yusuke Aonuma, a Tokyo Midtown Award Grand Prix winner known for his architectural works using dandelion fluff, joins Ayaho Ozono, a master of the Sogetsu school of ikebana who blends organic and inorganic beauty. The third artist, Yoko Ichikawa, creates installations that explore the relationship between nature and cultural memory. The exhibition proposes a future where man-made objects, including daily necessities and industrial equipment, are accepted as part of the natural cycle.

Through this public art initiative, the organisers aim to create a space for dialogue regarding the evolution of urban resource circulation in the heart of Tokyo.
