Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Mountain Clean invites public to preserve ski areas through cleanup activities

Mountain Clean is a collaborative environmental initiative that unites Tokyu Resorts & Stay, Burton Japan, and Protect Our Winters Japan. After a successful campaign in 2024, the event will return on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, at five Tokyu Snow Resort ski areas. For the first time, general participants are welcomed at Tambara Ski Park in Gunma Prefecture and Ski Jam Katsuyama in Fukui Prefecture.

As winter snow melts, ski resorts often reveal items such as PET bottles and abandoned ski equipment. Mountain Clean directly addresses this issue by coordinating clean-up efforts that restore and protect the mountain environment. Over 100 staff from Burton and POW will join forces across the resorts to gather litter and preserve the natural beauty for future generations.

Resort operators and guests will walk the courses and surrounding areas together, collecting debris and sharing in the responsibility of conservation. Registration is available online, and participation is free of charge. Spaces are limited to 30 participants per venue on a first-come, first-served basis. Those joining the event at Ski Jam Katsuyama will also have the opportunity to experience the “Katsuyama Nature School,” a programme offering hands-on environmental education that utilises the natural terrain to explore Earth’s formation and conservation.

Participants are encouraged to dress in durable clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for outdoor conditions and to prepare for sudden weather changes with appropriate cold-weather and heatstroke-prevention gear. Cleaning supplies such as bags and gloves will be provided onsite. In case of inclement weather, cancellation notices will be sent to registered email addresses three days prior to the event.

Last year’s Mountain Clean successfully engaged participants in meaningful environmental action while offering valuable rewards. This year promises to build on that success, enriching the experience with expanded educational opportunities.
