METI to host circular economy school for children in Tokyo this January

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will host an educational event titled “Circular Economy no Gakko” (Circular Economy School) in Tokyo from 9 to 12 January 2026. The programme, held at the ITOCHU SDGs STUDIO in Aoyama, aims to foster awareness and resource-circulating behaviours among primary school children. This initiative serves as a legacy project following the “Circular Economy Lab” featured at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

The programme features a collaboration with the “Science Manga Survival” series, a publication with significant popularity among Japanese primary school students. Participants will engage with an original manga created specifically for this event, alongside a specialised card game designed to deepen their understanding of resource cycles. To encourage continued learning at home, METI will provide all attendees with copies of the manga and the card game used during the session.

In addition to the classroom sessions, the venue will host interactive exhibits that translate circular economy principles into four tangible actions: buying, using, separating, and circulating. These displays adapt content previously shown at the Expo 2025 “Circular Economy Lab” to help visitors visualise how individual consumption habits impact broader resource management. While the classroom sessions require advance registration for a total of 390 available slots, the exhibition area remains open to the public without prior booking.
