Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Kankyo Daizen begins ditching plastic seals in their products

Kankyo Daizen Corporation, a Hokkaido-based company, has announced that it will cease using plastic “attention seals” on certain products from June 1. This development comes as part of the company’s innovative strategy to foster environmental sustainability, focusing on circular economy principles.

Situated in Kitami City, Hokkaido, Kankyo Daizen has a unique business model, converting cow urine — an often overlooked biomass source — into valuable products through a proprietary fermentation process. The resulting products, including deodorizing solutions and soil amendments, are in line with the company’s commitment to upcycling and resource preservation.

The decision to eliminate plastic seals is a response to the environmental challenges these items pose. While the seals play a role in making product features more comprehensible to customers, they increase plastic waste and carbon dioxide emissions once their utility ceases post-purchase.

As a result of this environmentally sensitive initiative, the company predicts an annual reduction of approximately 24 kilograms of plastic, signaling their commitment to reducing plastic waste in our ecosystems. This move is another example of corporations finding creative and effective ways to enhance their sustainability practices.
