Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Japan’s Regional Revitalization Awards honour eight municipalities

The Public-Private Partnership Promotion Organization has awarded eight municipalities for their outstanding contributions to regional revitalisation at the 3rd Regional Revitalization AWARD ceremony in Tokyo last week. Supported by the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the event highlighted successful collaborations between local governments and private companies aimed at tackling Japan’s regional challenges.

The awards celebrated a diverse range of projects. Sado City in Niigata Prefecture was honoured in the Regional Business Support category for its spot-work platform designed to alleviate local labour shortages. In Akita Prefecture, Yokote City received an award for increasing visitor numbers through the renovation of its manga museum, a project that leveraged local cultural resources.

Innovation in technology and education was also a key theme. Shikokuchuo City in Ehime Prefecture was recognised for integrating an advanced AR sports programme into its school curriculum, a first for Japan. Meanwhile, Uda City in Nara Prefecture won an award for its programme to develop digital transformation professionals within its own staff to drive DX across the entire region.

Several awards focused on initiatives to attract new residents and visitors. Takahama Town in Fukui Prefecture was awarded for its “primary industry workation” programme, which aims to vitalise local businesses by combining remote work with experiences in agriculture and fishing. Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture was commended for its hybrid analogue and digital promotional strategy to encourage young people to relocate.

Tokushima City in Tokushima Prefecture received the award for Advanced SDGs for its public-private partnership model for sustainable regional development. In the Relationship Population Expansion category, Nachikatsuura Town in Wakayama Prefecture was recognised for an international exchange programme between local and Cambodian primary school students, organised in collaboration with an Olympic athlete.

By showcasing these successful models, the awards show that public-private partnerships is an effective tool for addressing issues such as depopulation and economic stagnation in rural Japan.
