Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Japan’s first disposable menstrual disc ‘MOLARA’ debuts at Beautyworld Japan Tokyo

From May 15 to 17, MONA Co., Ltd. made its debut at Beautyworld Japan Tokyo (Venue: Tokyo Big Sight). MONA is committed to the mission of “enriching lives with new choices” and aims to build a society where menstruation becomes an enjoyable experience.

Beautyworld Japan is the largest comprehensive beauty trade show in Japan, where the country’s beauty trends come together. MONA Company showcased their domestically developed disposable menstrual disc called “MOLARA” (retail price: 6,435 yen including tax, 5,792 yen for subscription orders of 9 discs). The company’s representative, Momoko Mukai, promoted the menstrual disc’s benefits throughout the three-day event.

MOLARA launched as the first Japanese disposable menstrual disc

Since its launch in February this year, “MOLARA” has been spreading through word-of-mouth, primarily on social media, and currently, it is being used by over 1,500 individuals.

“Through my encounter with menstrual discs, I experienced an expansion of choices in my life,” Mukai, the representative of MONA, reflects on the product firsthand. She earnestly hopes to spread her own experience to the world and wishes that many working women who are struggling during their periods will not give up, but instead expand their possibilities.

MOLARA product features

  1. Can be used for up to 12 hours
In comparison to tampons with absorbency of 5ml to 9ml, and menstrual cups with a capacity of 15ml to 50ml, “MOLARA” has a capacity of 59ml, allowing it to hold a larger amount. This enables wearing for up to 12 hours even on heavy flow days. With this increased capacity, users are freed from the stress of frequent changes.
  2. Auto-dump capability
On heavy flow days, you can use the auto-dump feature to flush menstrual blood into the toilet without getting your hands dirty. Auto-dump is a technique where you tilt your upper body (refer to the image below) and apply pressure to expel only the menstrual blood.

    * The effectiveness of the auto-dump may vary from person to person. It is not a guaranteed feature of the product.

  4. Disposable and hygienic
The product is manufactured using sterilized domestically sourced materials (polyethylene/elastomer). It eliminates the need for cumbersome boiling sterilization or handwashing, similar to menstrual cups, making it both convenient and hygienic. Once purchased, “MOLARA” can be used immediately after opening.

After use, only the menstrual blood can be flushed down the toilet or washed away in the bath, and the main body can be disposed of as regular disposable sanitary products. Please dispose of it according to the instructions provided by your local municipality.

  5. Makes sexual intercourse possible
MOLARA is designed to not obstruct the vaginal passage, allowing for sexual intercourse (*). “According to an internet survey, a certain number of women desire to engage in sexual activity even during menstruation. There are a variety of instances such as long-distance relationships where women can only meet their partner during that time, or individuals who experience increased sexual desire due to hormonal changes during their period. In such situations, ‘MOLARA’ plays a significant role,” says Mukai.
    * It does not eliminate the risk of infection or pregnancy.
  6. Reduced moisture and itchiness by minimizing air contact
One of the discomfort factors during the menstrual period, such as moisture and itchiness, is alleviated. Unpleasant odors that were generated by exposure to air are also similarly reduced.

* The amount of fluids varies by individuals. Consult medical professionals if you have any concerning menstruation symptoms before starting to use these products.
