Over the past few years, COVID-19 has made people focus more on their mental and physical health than ever. As a result, the number of services and products that help people improve their well-being is increasing. As one of them, a traditional Japanese loincloth called “fundoshi” is now gathering attention.
“Fundoshi” supports people’s wellness
Fundoshi has historically been used as underwear and work clothes. However, its use declined after Western clothing was introduced to the Japanese market. Sumo wrestlers and performers at traditional festivals still wear it in modern times, however, it hasn’t been common to wear it in everyday life.
So, why is fundoshi so popular again? First of all, fundoshi is more comfortable to wear because it doesn’t constrict the waist or groin area. It also prevents darkening caused by rubbing on the bikini part, which is one of the biggest reasons why it is popular among women. Also, fundoshi has high breathability. Its users say fundoshi reduces odor and itchiness caused by stuffiness and discomfort during menstruation.
Some people use fundoshi only at night for better sleep, while others have completely replaced underwear with fundoshi for daily use. In response to its popularity, fashionable fundoshi brands have recently launched in Japan.
Fashionable fundoshi brands “Agrana”
Agrana is a fundoshi brand produced by Makiko Ikeya, an artist based in Kyoto. All are handmade using skin-friendly fabrics, such as pure silk and hemp. Pure silk is smooth and soft, often used in traditional Japanese clothing, Kimono. Hemp is antibacterial, durable and extremely soft. Agrana dyes these fabrics with seasonal botanicals to create beautiful gentle colors.
In Japan, there are various types of fundoshi. Agrana mainly manufactures “Ecchuu Fundoshi,” a long cloth with stripes on both sides. Wearing this may require some practice at first. The brand also sells “Mocco Fundoshi” for women, which resembles Western-style underwear and is easier to wear than the other type.
