Itoki Corporation signed a Building Wood Use Promotion Agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in December 2025. The agreement establishes a framework for the company to expand its use of domestic timber in office interiors and furniture. Itoki aims to utilise 3,250 cubic metres of domestic wood over the next five years, representing a significant increase from the 726 cubic metres used during the previous five-year period.

Under the terms of the agreement, Itoki will prioritise domestic timber for non-residential interior projects that it designs and constructs. This commitment extends to furniture and fixtures, including desks, chairs, and storage units. The company will ensure that all timber used complies with the Act on Promotion of Use and Distribution of Legally-Harvested Wood and Wood Products to support sustainable forestry and biodiversity.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will support these efforts by providing technical advice and information on available subsidies. The ministry will also facilitate consultations with experts to streamline the integration of wood into architectural projects.
Itoki has also obtained approval to use the Japan Wood Label and the Wood Carbon Label, managed by the Japan Wood Design Association. The Japan Wood Label identifies products made from domestic timber, while the Wood Carbon Label quantifies the amount of carbon sequestered within the wood. The company intends to display these labels on its furniture to provide transparency regarding environmental impact and carbon storage.
The initiative builds upon Itoki’s “Econifa” solution, a programme launched in 2010 to manage the selection, design, and delivery of domestic timber products. Itoki has conducted joint research with academic institutions to verify the physiological and psychological benefits of wooden office environments.
This agreement remains in effect until 31 December 2030.
