Ishikawa recycled paper Okiagami supports Noto earthquake recovery

Osaka-based printing firm Kousoku Offset has begun integrating Okiagami into their services, a 100 per cent recycled paper manufactured and processed at paper mills within Ishikawa Prefecture using waste paper collected from the same region. This paper is part of the “Ishikawa Prefecture Paper Local Production for Local Consumption Project” launched in collaboration with local businesses in 2023.

The project aims to establish a regional circular economy by keeping the lifecycle of paper resources within the prefecture. The name Okiagami derives from Kaga Hachiman Okiagari, a rare traditional craft and folk toy from Kanazawa City. These papier-mache dolls represent health, longevity, and business prosperity. The name was selected through a public appeal because the concept of “rising up” (okiagari) aligns with the theme of “regeneration” inherent in recycling.

The paper possesses a distinct aesthetic characterized by a slight grey tint and visible red and blue specks typical of recycled materials. It is available in two thicknesses to suit various printing needs.

A portion of the proceeds from Okiagami sales is donated as relief funds for the Noto Peninsula earthquake. Through the use of this paper, Kousoku Offset intends to contribute to regional recovery and social well-being in Ishikawa.
